Projects in 2005

April 6 & 7 Harrison State Forest Global ReLeaf

Students gather on the first of two days to learn how the reclaimed land is turning into a forest and to plant
2,000 new tree seedlings.

A small but important wetland starting to develop.  The potted pin oak and river birch will be planted around the perimeter to further improve the habitat.

Students line up to get a bucket full of tree seedlings provided by the Ohio Dept of Natural Resources, Div of Forestry.

The Wetland Tree Team gets ready to plant the potted trees around the new wetland.

Looks like mass confusion, but students are working in teams of two to plant the trees in marked rows.  Thousands of trees are healthy and thriving from previous years plantings.

Somehow a spunky river birch planted in 2004 survived being run over by an ATV.  Students learned that such "harmless fun" can destroy a small habitat very quickly.

Rick Miller of the Div of Forestry works with a student to plant seedlings in the tough soil.

Students take a break to eat lunch in the beautiful spring sunshine.

May 9 & 11 Massillon Park Department Elementary Enviro Education
Each year the Massillon Park Department visits the elementary schools in the city to host an environmental educational program.  This year they invited EAP to be the program.  Mindy Stoner from the Park Dept. and Pam Feagler from EAP visited third grade classes at Whittier, Bowers, Emerson, Gorrell, Smith, and St. Mary's Elementary Schools to demonstrate water recycling.  Pam used an urban landscape to show how rain runs off of pavement into the creeks causing immediate flooding, but eventually leading to a dryer earth.  The rural landscape shows how rain soaks into the earth like sponge to replenish and purify our drinking water.

Students at St. Mary's Elementary are quized about how rain water is recycled

Students at St. Mary's are quizzed about how the earth recycles our rainwater.

Students learn that the earth is a sponge that soaks up rain water

Students watch as "rain" soaks into the
earth like a sponge.
